32. Cleveland Browns

What else did we expect to see from the Cleveland Browns? They were hindered by turnovers, drops, and missed opportunities across the board. Their first three drives against the Philadelphia Eagles went as follows: Punt, Punt, Failed Fake Punt.

Their offense was stagnant, with the only touchdown coming on the heels of a bad pass interference call on Malcolm Jenkins.

Robert Griffin III continued to show flashes of his Heisman trophy winning-self, but the demons of his days in Washington still haunt him. Scrambling in the fourth quarter, Griffin’s left shoulder collided with Eagles defensive back Jalen Mills. Griffin slowly walked to the sideline with his arm hanging, and doctors were examining his non-throwing shoulder. Post-game Griffin said he sprained his shoulder, but doesn’t expect to miss a lot of time.

The Browns quarterback threw an interception to safety Rodney McLeod, and also lost multiple snaps. One of those missed snaps resulted in an Eagles safety.

Griffin did connect on two deep passes with Corey Coleman and Terrelle Pryor, but the wide receivers dropped as many balls as they caught. Tight end Gary Barnidge was target twice, but failed to come up with the ball.

Despite giving up 29 points to the rookie quarterback Wentz, there were some positive signs from the Browns defense. Rookie Carl Nassib worked well against Lane Johnson, and managed to sack his fellow-rookie Wentz. Nassib also deflected a pass when he stuck his hand out to his side.

As we expected, the Cleveland Browns are awful, and the Deshaun Watson jerseys are already in the pro shop at the Dog Pound.

Chip Kelly is on the verge of destroying yet another NFL franchise. Between the lack of talent on both sides of the ball and the multiple off the field issues surrounding this team, everything that could go wrong, has.

When Blaine Gabbert is entering the season as your starting quarterback, you know a team will struggle to score points. Take out any receiving talent, and you might not score a point all season.

The only member of the 49ers offense I have any confidence in is Carlos Hyde. Even that is not saying much, as the third-year back out of Ohio State has only started seven games in his career. If Hyde can stay healthy he could have a solid season in San Francisco.

San Francisco might be able to hang their hat on defense to start the year, but the up-tempo offense Chip Kelly runs will wear them out. 49er defenders can expect to be out on the field for 40 minutes, as Blaine Gabbert will quickly produce three and outs.

There’s a reason San Francisco couldn’t bring in free agents this year, and that’s because of Chip Kelly. The defense will be worn out, and they’ll have no depth to substitute players in. Coming out of Oregon, Chip Kelly was used to having a bigger depth chart littered with five-star 19 year olds. When one man went down, they had the talent to replace them.

The entire league has seen Chip’s five plays on offense, and there’s nothing a stubborn Kelly can do.

Wake up Chip, you’re not in Oregon anymore.

30. Tennessee Titans

It was a tale of two-halves for the Tennessee Titans in their season-opener at home. After their defense shutout Shaun Hill and the Minnesota Vikings going into the locker room, the floodgates opened.

Tennessee gave up 25 points in the second half, responding with just six points of their own. Twelve of those points were field goals by Vikings kicker Blair Walsh, while the remaining points came off of turnovers. So while the defense never broke, they bent just a bit too much.

The defense also didn’t break into the box score, failing to force a turnover or complete a sack.

Marcus Mariota finished 25/41 with 271 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick-six to linebacker Eric Kendricks. The former Duck also added 19 rushing yards to the box score. Mariota also botched a read-option hand-off that was fumbled and subsequently returned for a Vikings touchdown.

Running back DeMarco Murray had a mixed bag of results to start to his Titans career. He scored the Titans only two touchdowns, but capped the game off with a fumble on a second down in the fourth quarter. Heisman trophy winner Derrick Henry didn’t get many opportunities, rushing just five times for three yards.

It was good to see Tajae Sharpe emerge after being drafted out of UMass this spring. The rookie led the team with seven catches for 76 receiving yards. Mariota was clearly favoring Sharpe throughout the game, targeting him 11 times.

Times won’t get any easier for the Titans, as they play Detroit, Oakland, and Houston in the coming weeks.

29. San Diego Chargers

Many thought last season was a fluke year for the San Diego Chargers, one riddled by injuries and inconsistencies. They were able to add talent in both the draft and free agency, bring in Joey Bosa, Casey Hayward, and Travis Benjamin.

But so far it appears the entire organization is a fluke. Mike McCoy is on the hot seat, Joey Bosa held out the entire preseason, and star wide receiver Keenan Allen appears to have suffered a major knee injury.

A fourth quarter collapse against the Kansas City Chiefs won’t make things any better. Going into halftime up 21-3, things looked like they finally changed for the better. Melvin Gordon scored two touchdowns, Manti Te’o was all over the field, and Jason Verrett picked off Alex Smith.

Then the wheels fell off. Kansas City scored 24 points and forced overtime with a minute remaining thanks to a Spencer Ware rushing touchdown. Alex Smith took one in to cap off the San Diego Chargers 11th loss over their last 13 games.

I would not be shocked to see Mike McCoy standing in the unemployment line mid-season. San Diego has a late bye week, but they have a tough stretch of games heading into it with a lot of travel.

Former Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt was hired over the offseason as offensive coordinator, and would likely take over as the interim head coach.

You also have to wonder about the future of Philip Rivers, who will turn 36 this season. His recently restructured contract runs through the 2019 season, but roster bonuses could change his status. Approximately $11M of River’s 2017 salary becomes fully guaranteed on the 2nd day of the 2017 waiver period, and the following seasons have a $5 million bonus paid on the third day of the league year.

Chicago was shutout in the second half of Sundays game in Houston, and will have a tall task next week during Monday Night Football when Carson Wentz comes to town.

The Bears offensive line was horrendous, allowing Cutler to be sacked five times. Bobby Massie and Charles Leno received two of Pro Football Focus’s lowest grades among offensive tackles Sunday. Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus were all over the top tackles from start to finish.

Jay Cutler also fumbled twice between all of the pressure, although he was lucky enough to recover both of them.

Houston forced Chicago to punt seven times, truly showing how inefficient the Bears offense is despite having Kevin White, Alshon Jeffery, and Jeremy Langford. White was the Bears first round pick last season, but never took the field because of a stress fracture in his shin.

Langford finished the game averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. Pro Football Focus rated him the 32nd best running back of the day at the conclusion of Sundays games.

In case you needed more proof as to how inefficient the Bears offense is they failed to even attempt a field goal.

Head coach John Fox made the Bears performance even worse with a bad challenge on a Will Fuller catch. The all mighty Twitter-verse made sure to call him out for it.

Seats are about to warm up in Chicago, which is rare this time of year.

27. Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons defense failed to contain Jameis Winston, who threw four touchdowns in a 31-24 Buccaneers victory.

Matt Ryan has proven himself to be a good quarterback, but not among the leagues’ elite. The 31-year-old has always put up decent numbers, except when it comes to playoff appearances. The Falcons haven’t won a playoff game since knocking off the Seahawks in the 2012 NFC Division game.

Running back Devonta Freeman failed to show signs of life coming off a breakout season in 2015. He only managed 20 yards on 11 rushing attempts, while Tevin Coleman averaged 2.8 yards per carry on eight attempts.

Coleman ultimately led Atlanta in receiving yards with 95 against the Buccaneers.

Dan Quinn was brought in from Seattle to help turn the Falcons defense around, but we have not seen the performance translate. Two rookies are starting at linebacker, and first round pick Keanu Neal is recovering from knee surgery. The former Florida Gator had a knee scope, and likely won’t play next week as well.

Fans could tell the secondary missed having a playmaker like Neal on their side, as the Falcons gave up multiple passes of over 20 yards. Mike Evan’s 45 yard catch highlighted the defenses’ struggles to keep the receivers in-front of them.

Atlanta will travel to Oakland, where they will face a much improved Raiders team coming off a big win over the New Orleans Saints. Facing a defense consisting of Khalil Mack, Bruce Irvin, Jihad Ward, and Malcolm Smith will be no easy task for this Falcons team.

Not much went right for the start of the Adam Gase era in Miami. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill failed to find a receiver in the end zone, yet he somehow got himself in on a run.

Running back Arian Foster got the start over Jay Ajayi, who didn’t even make the trip to Seattle. The veteran Foster is seldom healthy, but when he is he’s been one of the best in the game. Foster only managed 38 yards on 13 attempts.

Foster also led the Miami Dolphins in receiving yards with 62. Considering number one receiver Jarvis Landry had seven catches, you could tell this day would not go over well for Miami.

Aside from Tannehill’s rouge rushing touchdown, the only other points came off the leg of Andrew Franks. The Dolphins kicker hit a 41 yard attempt, but finished 1/2 on the day.

Cameron Wake had practically zero statistics from this game, recording just one quarterback hit. Somehow he didn’t even get a tackle on that play.

Ndamukong Suh had his first sack of the year, while Mario WIlliams, Jordan Phillips, and Jason Jones combined for two of their own.

The Dolphins schedule doesn’t get much easier after a tough loss on the west coast. They’ll play New England, but get a break with the Browns in week three in their home opener.

Drew Brees can only carry the New Orleans Saints so far for so long. The future Hall of Fame quarterback had a league-leading 423 passing yards, but the defense continued to struggle. It’s the same story with the same characters.

New Orleans allowed a last minute touchdown to the Oakland Raiders, who subsequently went for a two point conversion to take the lead. Derek Carr hit Michael Crabtree on a fade route, sending Saints fans home disappointed once again.

The defense allowed 486 total yards, which would have been the third most they allowed all of last season. Oakland finished 3-4 in the red zone, and had eight rushing first downs.

New Orleans has been holding off the inevitable for too long. This team is in desperate need for a rebuild, and they’ve been oblivious to that fact for years. This franchise needs to start from scratch and develop young talent on both sides of the ball.

The team is trying to do two things at once: develop talent for the long haul and contend this season. They already have a couple of the pieces with Brandin Cooks, Stephone Anthony, and Vonn Bell. But picking up players off the scrapheap like Jahri Evans, Paul Kruger, and Coby Fleener won’t make this any easier. You can’t fix a broken arm with a band-aid, and that is exactly what Mickey Loomis has been doing for the past couple of years.

Since winning the Super Bowl in 2009, the Saints have a 56-41 record. They’ve had three 7-9 seasons in the past four years. Mediocrity should not be accepted by a fan base, and the Saints brass will begin to feel the pressure if the play on the field continues down this “Groundhogs Day” path.

Jameis Winston was able to salvage Sundays game against the Atlanta Falcons with an impressive four touchdowns. Wide receiver Mike Evans finally learned how to catch, as he pulled in nearly 100 receiving yards on five catches.

Tampa Bay had just one turnover, an interception early in the game from Winston. All of the receivers were able to keep the ball in their own hands, while fighting off the horrendous Falcons defense.

The Buccaneers defense on the other hand showed signs of life, in particularly Kwon Alexander. The sophomore linebacker had an impressive team-high 17 tackles, two of which were for a loss, and a sack in his box score. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy also raked in some numbers, sacking Matt Ryan twice.

McCoy finished second in Pro Football Focus’s rankings among defensive linemen. His pass rush finished just as high, falling only behind New York Jet Leonard Williams.

First round pick Vernon Hargreaves had some rookie mistakes, blowing the coverage on Mohammed Sanu’s 59-yard catch. The former Gator Hargreaves would make up for the miscue with a big play late in the game to stop the Atlanta offense.

And easing the minds of Buccaneers fans was second round pick Roberto Aguayo, a kicker from Florida State. After struggling in the preseason, Aguayo hit all five of his kicks, including a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Next week Jameis and the Tampa Bay offense have to deal with the Arizona Cardinals defense, hardly an easy task. Football Outsiders ranked the Arizona Cardinals defense the third best in the NFL, and the Cardinals are returning the majority of their starters.

23. Los Angeles Rams

As we saw on Hard Knocks, the Los Angeles Rams have been through a lot of change over the offseason. Between moving the franchise across the country from St. Louis to Los Angeles, the team acquired the first overall pick and drafted Cal quarterback Jared Goff.

Case Keenum enters the season as the number one quarterback, as Goff is still getting a hold of the pro-style offense. In college Goff never lined up under center and rarely had to do things such as call a play in the huddle or call an audible.

Regardless, the Rams will groom him behind Keenum and Sean Mannion this season, and hopefully allow him to get some snaps later in the season.

Meanwhile, running back Todd Gurley will handle the majority of the offense as he comes off his rookie of the year campaign. Despite tearing his ACL during his final season at Georgia, Gurley earned Pro Bowl honors with 10 rushing touchdowns and over 1,100 yards on the ground.

Avoiding the sophomore slump should be no problem for the Rams superstar.

Defensively, the Rams are still figuring out some of their pieces. One piece they won’t worry about is two-time Pro Bowler Aaron Donald. The Rams defensive lineman managed 11 sacks last season, and has 20 in his young career.

The rest of the Rams defensive line is also solid, boasting William Hayes, Robert Quinn, and Michael Brockers. Linebacker Alec Ogeltree makes the Rams front even more menacing at times.

Bigger questions lie in the secondary, where the Rams lost pieces to free agency over the offseason.

Lamarcus Joyner showed on Hard Knocks his heart may not fully be behind football, and even sat out of practices because he was not getting first team snaps.

If not for the big move to Los Angeles, head coach Jeff Fisher might not be employed by the Rams. He remains on the hot seat thanks to his teams history of mediocrity.

22. Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts suffered a major fall from grace last season after falling short of a Super Bowl berth. Injuries and poor free agency decisions left the team scrambling to get a win. Andrew Luck missed multiple games due to injury, yet still received one of the largest contract extensions in NFL history.

Luck still has a ton of weapons at wide receiver, including Donte Moncrief, T.Y. Hilton, and Philip Dorsett. The rushing attack has never been strong in Indianapolis over the past couple of years, and Frank Gore is still dragging along at the top of the depth chart.

Indianapolis spent their first round pick on Alabama center Ryan Kelly, a much needed addition after Andrew Luck and the rest of the Indianapolis quarterbacks were pushed around throughout the season.

Kelly finished his first regular season game well, closing out Pro Football Focus’ top five center ranking for the first week of the young NFL season.

While the offense can be strong the defense in Indianapolis needs work. They fell in the fourth quarter to the Detroit Lions, something that should never happen. The pass rush was not truly effective, reaching Stafford and taking him down only one time. The secondary still as questions, even after making upgrades in the offseason. T.J. Green was drafted in the second round, but is still second on the Colts depth chart.

Patrick Robinson signed a three year contract over the offseason to help Vontae Davis at corner. Antonio Cromartie also made the final cuts after coming in late during the offseason process after Davis injured ligaments in his ankle. Cromartie finished 11th on Pro Football Focus’ cornerback rankings Sunday, while Robinson was 57th.

The Detroit Lions and quarterback Matthew Stafford would have been much lower on this list if not for beating the Colts Sunday.

While Stafford drove the Lions down the field in their 39-35 win over the Colts, he was clearly not happy when they failed to get out of bounds. Not having a veteran like Calvin Johnson has already proven to be a burden on this team.

Time will tell if the Lions can win with short passes to Marvin Jones, Eric Ebron, and Golden Tate throughout a long NFL season. Stafford’s longest throw was to Jones for just 32 yards, as many of Stafford’s 31 passes were short efficiency attempts.

Much of the offense came thanks to running back Theo Riddick, who had a touchdown both by ground and air. Sophomore Ameer Abdullah averaged 5.3 yards per carry in his 12 rushing attempts, still failing to produce what made him a hot commodity coming out of Nebraska last year.

Defensively the Lions are still trying to find their identity without Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairly up front. Kerry Hyder had the only two Lions sacks of the game, while no defensive backs picked off Andrew Luck.

Rookie second-round pick A’Shawn Robinson had just one tackle, a disappointing start to his career.

The secondary struggled against Andrew Luck, with zero member of the squad finishing no better than 38th overall on the Pro Football Focus game day rankings.

Stephon Gilmore had a decent game, as did Ronald Darby in some aspects of the game at cornerback. Despite Football Outsiders‘ metrics pointing against the Bills defensive efficiency last season, the two are bound to have a great run in Buffalo

Penalties killed the Bills on both sides of the ball. As per usual with a Rex Ryan coached team, the Bills had eight penalties called on them. Those penalties totaled up to 89 yards, more than any one skilled position player had all day.

Buffalo has to regain their thoughts quickly as they prepare to host Rex Ryans’ former team, the New York Jets, on Thursday night. This week should be entertaining with the Ryan brothers hanging around prior to the Jets game.

Flacco’s only touchdown pass ended up in the hands of Mike Wallace, who led the team with 91 receiving yards. Steve Smith Sr. had five catches but only had 19 yards to his name.

After being cut and re-signed by the Ravens following the final preseason game, Justin Forsett was looking to prove his doubters wrong. Forsett rushed 10 times for 41 yards, while Terrance West had 12 rushes for 32 yards.

Baltimore is anxiously awaiting the return of rookie Kenneth Dixon, who is nursing a knee injury.

Shareece Wright impressed with 11 tackles, three of which were for a loss. Free agent addition Eric Weddle had four tackles and a pass deflection in his Ravens regular season debut.

Baltimore will have to prove they are the team of the last seven years and not the team of just 2015. Reliable weapons on offense and a stout defense is the recipe to the Ravens success. If they can achieve that, their rankings will rise.

Flacco and the Ravens will have the fortunate task of facing the Cleveland Browns next week. They’ll most likely be a heavy favorite, and advance into the Oakland game with a perfect 2-0 record.

While Rayne Dakota Prescott impressed in the preseason, it is simply just that. The preseason. He showed some positives and negatives against the New York Giants, but failed to complete the final drive of the game after Terrance Williams failed to get out of bounds on the final play.

Prescott finished his rookie debut 25/45 with 227 yards and no touchdowns. He often reached for his security blanket Jason Witten, who had nine catches and was targeted 14 times. The veteran tight end finished with 66 receiving yards.

Rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott provided the only touchdown of the game for Dallas in the third quarter, and finished with 51 yards on the ground.

Dez Bryant only managed one catch, and the remaining receivers were held up by the Giants upgraded secondary. The only other points for the Cowboys came off the leg of Dan Bailey, as Prescott failed to complete drives.

Even with a healthy offense, the Cowboys defense could not keep them afloat for an entire season. They possess limited experience and talent in pass rushing, and their secondary is suspect.

Dallas will now travel to Washington to face the Redskins at 1 o’clock on Fox. The Cowboys have now lost 12 of their last 13 games when Tony Romo is out with an injury.

The Carson Wentz era in Philadelphia arrived a bit unexpectedly, as Howie Roseman traded starting quarterback Sam Bradford to Minnesota a week before the season. Wentz had suffered a hairline fracture to his ribs in the first preseason game, and hadn’t gotten any preseason snaps after the injury.

Regardless, the Eagles felt that it was time to let the second overall pick perform against the Cleveland Browns, and perform he did. The rookie out of North Dakota State went 22/37 with 278 passing yards and two perfectly placed touchdowns.

The first touchdown came on the opening drive to Jordan Matthews, whom he found seven times Sunday. Wentz’s second score was dropped right into the hands of Nelson Agholor, the Eagles 2015 first round pick who disappointed last season.

Running back Ryan Mathews was healthy and proved he could be a dominant force when on the field. He carried the ball 22 times, and had the Eagles third touchdown of the game.

On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz lived up to the hype surrounding his hire. Three members of the Eagles newly-installed 4-3 defensive line managed to sack Robert Griffin III, including the $102 million man Fletcher Cox.

The Eagles secondary entered the season with several question marks, especially with Eric Rowe heading to New England. Free-agent signing Rodney McLeod picked-off a deflected pass, and second-year linebacker Jordan Hicks got his hand on a ball.

The Eagles aren’t a perfect team, and their success came against one of sports worst franchises. However, the attributes Wentz showed on the field gives Philadelphia fans hope that the future is sunny.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville has improved drastically over the past couple of seasons thanks to smart spending and a solid scouting department. Snagging offensive catalysts Blake Bortles, Allen Robinson, and T.J. Yeldon in the draft was key, as was finding undrafted free agent Allen Hurns.

This year they focused on drafting defense, cashing in with defensive back Jalen Ramsey and linebacker Myles Jack, two players many thought were top five players in the draft class. They also snatched up Yannick Ngakoue and Sheldon Day to add young depth to their defensive line.

Throw in the free agent additions of Malik Jackson, Julius Thomas, Price Amukamara and Chris Ivory and you have the foundation of a playoff contender.

Jacksonville is also finally seeing their first round pick from 2015 Dante Fowler on the field after he tore his ACL in organized team activities last year.

Gus Bradley and company nearly knocked off Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, but fell just a couple yards short of having one final shot at the end zone. Blake Bortles threw for 320 yards, and found Julius Thomas for his first touchdown of the season. T.J. Yeldon also found the promise land in the first half to keep the Jaguars in game.

While the Jaguars haven’t been relevant since 2007, the fans have paid their penance and are ready for a competitive season.

However, should the Jaguars fall short of their goals, head coach Gus Bradley could be shown the door in favor of a more experienced coach who can take this talented team to the next level.

15. Minnesota Vikings

The Teddy Bridgewater-less Minnesota Vikings offense scuffled with Shaun Hill Sunday, as they were shutout by the Tennessee Titans in the first half. Miscues by the Titans resulted in the Vikings defense scoring off two turnovers, saving the Vikings season opener.

Running back Adrian Peterson was stifled throughout the game, averaging less than two yards a carry on 19 attempts. The combination of Peterson’s playmaking ability and the defense’s toughness are supposed to get the Vikings past the loss of Bridgewater. If Peterson continues to not show life, the Vikings could be in more trouble than they predicted.

Thankfully, Sam Bradford should be ready to takeover the starting job now that he’s had time to digest the playbook and develop chemistry with his receivers. Minnesota gave up a lot to acquire the former first overall pick from the Philadelphia Eagles, and their fanbase is hoping that gamble pays off this season.

Once Sam Bradford is fully installed into the offense, expect the ball to be spread out much more than it was with Shaun Hill under center. Bradford favors passing to his tight end, so Kyle Rudolph will expect many more catchable targets coming his way.

An interesting note about the Vikings offense snuck into this game. First-round pick Laquon Treadwell did not play one snap in the season opener, despite not being on the injury report. We’ll see whether he tweaked something in pregame, or if something else held Treadwell out of this game.

Minnesota now has the chance to open up their new stadium on Sunday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers.

14. New York Giants

Ben McAdoo’s New York Giants won in Dallas by the skin of their teeth, but they looked much improved compared to recent seasons.

One factor in the Giants revival was wide receiver Victor Cruz, who returned after missing nearly two seasons with leg injuries. Cruz salsa’d in the end zone after a short touchdown pass from Eli Manning, and his teammates mobbed him with congratulations.

Rookie wide receiver Sterling Shepard was a personal favorite coming out of Oklahoma. The former Sooner scored his first career touchdown and had 43 yards behind his first career game.

And of course, Odell Beckham Jr. led the team in yardage with 73 yards through the air. He failed to find the end zone, yielding to his two teammates.

Offseason additions Janoris Jenkins and Olivier Vernon made their presence felt with seven tackles between them. No Giant forced a single turnover, but rookie Eli Apple made a couple of good plays in his debut.

With so many questions once again being presented in the NFC East, the Giants have an opportunity to sneak into the playoffs with nine wins once again. Their last two Super Bowl victories have come off of nine and 10 win seasons. Anything is possible once you reach the post-season, and no one knows that better than Eli Manning.

The Giants offense is expecting to have a field day in week two when the New Orleans Saints come to town. The Saints lost to the Oakland Raiders on a last minute touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion.

Despite losing by just one point to the Cincinnati Bengals, there was plenty to like from the New York Jets. Eric Decker and Quincy Enunwa each scored touchdowns from Ryan Fitzpatrick, but it was not enough to keep up with Bengals superstar A.J. Green. The semi-professional juggler made 12 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. The rest of the Bengals receivers combined for 186 yards.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a critical interception to cornerback Josh Shaw (yes, that Josh Shaw) to seal the Bengals victory.

As pointed out by ESPN’s Rich Cimini, “the Jets were No. 1 in red-zone efficiency last season, but they started with a stinker against the Bengals — 2-for-5. They had first downs at the 4 and 3, and had to settle for field goal attempts both times.”

On defense the Jets continued to look strong up front. Leonard Williams, their first round pick out of USC last year, had 2.5 sacks, six tackles, and five quarterback hits. Pro Football Focus ranked Williams the best defensive lineman in the league thus far.

Muhammad Wilkerson had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks on the day. Steve McLendon joined the sack party with a pair of his own on Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.

Darrell Revis looked another year older, struggling to contain A.J. Green all day.

Rookie Jalin Marshall out of Ohio State has proven to be a solid return specialist, averaging 36.7 yards per kick return Sunday.

This loss will sting even more after Nick Folk missed an extra point attempt and a field goal.

The Jets can redeem themselves when they face their old friend Rex Ryan in prime time next week.

Every aspect of the Raiders offense took advantage of the New Orleans Saints stingy defense. Three running backs (Jalen Richard, Latavius Murray, and Jamize Olawale) each rushed for a touchdown. Richard’s touchdown was for an impressive 75 yards.

Head coach Jack Del Rio listened to Herm Edwards and (I’m paraphrasing) coached to win the game. Del Rio opted to attempt a two point conversion to take a one point lead rather than kick a game-tying extra point with the hopes of going to overtime.

Amari Cooper continues to impress in his young career with the Raiders. The sophomore wide receiver out of Alabama had 137 receiving yards, including the last-minute two-point conversion to win the game. Veteran Michael Crabtree had a big touchdown in his second season with Oakland, and finished with 87 receiving yards.

Free-agent signing Bruce Irvin had the lone sack for the Raiders, while Khalil Mack had seven tackles. Reggie Nelson and Malcolm Smith had a team high eight tackles apiece.

Oakland can compete in this division, and possibly make a run at the wild card. They had seven wins last year, and they are much improved. Expect them to crack the top 10 at some point.

Led by their franchise-tagged quarterback Kirk Cousins, the Redskins will have a lot of questions to answer relating to their future. First, is Kirk Cousins the quarterback of the future who can take this team to a Super Bowl? Can Matt Jones handle the starting running back duties? Can Josh Doctson stay healthy and be the starting wide receiver of the future? That’s a lot to find out from the offense alone in one season.

The Redskins as a whole will have a tough time beating the Pittsburgh Steelers during Monday Night Football, but the offense could pull off some big plays. Pittsburgh’s defense struggled against the pass last season, and first round pick Artie Burns has been banged up in the preseason.

Defensively for Washington, they’ll have a tough time managing Antonio Brown down the field. While the loss of Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton will help rookie Su’a Cravens and corner Josh Norman, Antonio Brown can do wonders with a football.

We will need to see if Josh Norman was a product of the Carolina defense, or if he is really one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. His sudden release from the Panthers drew questions, but the Redskins took a shot regardless.

This game could either be a shootout or a strategic game of chess. Jon Gruden will be watching his brother Jay from the broadcast booth, and you never know what can happen when the Grudens are involved.

Houston gave Osweiler a four-year contract worth $72 million. They added pieces such as running back Lamar Miller in free agency, and drafted two speedsters at wide receiver. Will Fuller and Braxton Miller were two of the most dynamic offensive playmakers in college football, and now they’re on the same team as DeAndre Hopkins.

Will Fuller proved his doubters wrong after hauling in an 18-yard touchdown for the Texans. While Lamar Miller didn’t reach the endzone, he had over 100 rushing yards and a career-high 28 carries.

Osweiler himself finished 22/35 with 231 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick. DeAndre Hopkins had the second touchdown for the Texans.

All in all it was a very well balanced game from Bill O’Brien and Brock Osweiler.

Defensively, Jadeveon Clowney reeked havoc, sacking, tackling, and quarterback hitting throughout his return. The former first overall pick has been riddled with injuries throughout his career, so this was a welcome sight.

J.J. Watt is not fully healthy from his groin surgery, but still played the game. He only recorded one sack, still not healthy to be himself.

A true test will arrive in the form of the Kansas City Chiefs, who pulled a win out of nowhere Sunday. They’ll face Houston in Week 2.

The organization hasn’t seen a playoff win since 1990 when they beat the Houston Oilers in the wild card round. The team hasn’t been to a Super Bowl since 1988, and has a bare trophy case waiting to be filled.

Andy Dalton has proven himself to be an above average quarterback in the NFL. Maybe it was the hair. Whatever it was, Dalton set a career-low in interceptions and had another 20 touchdown season.

While the depth of the Bengals receiving corp left in free agency, Tyler Boyd was drafted out of Pitt in the second round last year. I compared Boyd to A.J. Green during the draft process, citing similar measurables and combine results.

Speaking of A.J. Green, the superstar can not be contained. He had 12 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown against Darrell Revis and the New York Jets Sunday.

Composure will be one of the biggest keys for the Cincinnati Bengals this season. They lost their composure and concentration last season during the playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a two point loss.

If the Bengals can not get over the Wild Card hump, Marvin Jones could be out the door after after 14 years. Winning is everything, especially when it’s in the playoffs.

Down by 17 points to the lowly San Diego Chargers, Alex Smith found wide receiver Jeremy Maclin deep on a fade route to regain some control over a 17 point deficit.

With running back Jamaal Charles out while recovering from a torn ACL, Spencer Ware got the majority of the carries. Ware had 70 rushing yards a touchdown, while Charcandrick West provided absolutely nothing to the Chiefs offense. Ware also led in receiving yards with 129 on just seven catches.

Andy “Big Red” Reid is known for relying heavily on the passing game, evident by Smith’s 48 passing attempts. Alex Smith is a classic game manager, so he was hitting receivers on short routes left and right. Smith averaged over seven yards a completion against the Chargers this year.

To cap off the Chiefs comeback, Alex Smith ran in for the game winning touchdown in overtime.

Defensively the points were fairly spread out. Steven Nelson and Justin March each had nine tackles, while Eric Berry returned from his holdout to take down six players.

Former Auburn standout Dee Ford had the only sack of the game for Kansas City. The Chiefs will need to generate more pass rush, but that will come once members of their front seven are fully healthy.

Kansas City has a tough stretch of games coming up, including Oakland, New York, Houston, and Pittsburgh.

7. Seattle Seahawks

In typical Seattle Seahawks fashion, this game came down to the wire. The majority of the game was promoted by lackluster offense between Miami and Seattle. The two teams combined to score just three field goals in the first three quarters. Not until Ryan Tannehill chugged into the endzone did we have our first touchdown.

But in true Russell Wilson fashion, the Seahawks won on a touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin in the end zone. Russell Wilson has incredible escapability, and his ability to extend the play is unmatched in today’s NFL.

While many would consider this rating high for Seattle after a poor start to the season, take a look at what they did do. They kept Jarvis Landry out of the end zone, contained Arian Foster, and disrupted Tannehill with five sacks.

Those five sacks from Seattle came across the depth chart. K.J. Wright, Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Cassius Marsh, and Frank Clark each pulled Ryan Tannehill to the ground in this one.

This defense is still dominant, no matter how you look at it. They’ll look even better when they face the Rams and 49ers over the next two weeks.

Also, many of the Seahawks rookies are injured, including first round pick Germain Ifedi. Not having Ifedi playing on the offensive line, as well as losing C.J. Procise and Nick Vannett can hamper an offense looking to produce more young playmakers on offense.

Don’t worry about the Seahawks just yet. They’ll pull through at the end of the season like always.

Eddie Lacy looked as slim as advertised after looking like a stuffed loaf of bread last season. Lacy ran for 61 yards, and showed some promise that he’s back to his old self thanks to a new offseason program.

The Packers veterans on defense looked ready to play, sacking Blake Bortles thrice in the season opener. Morgan Burnett, Nick Perry, and Clay Matthews each broke past the offensive line to feast on some Jaguar.

Second year linebacker Joe Thomas had his first career interception as well.

Early in the game, Green Bay had failed to stop the Jaguars on four times on fourth down tries. They’ll certainly want to clean that up in practice.

You will have to keep an eye on Sam Shields, who is reportedly under the concussion protocol. Green Bay has two critical divisional games coming up before they begin to face the NFC East in October.

Facing the Washington Redskins secondary should make this an easy task for Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown. While Josh Norman is now lurking at the line of scrimmage, Antonio Brown knows how to get open no matter who is on him.

Even if Brown draws double coverage from Norman and a safety, that just opens up the field for Sammie Coates or Jesse James.

De’Angelo Williams will be back once again with Le’Veon Bell out. Last season Williams had a monster start to the year, giving fans hope the Steelers run game wont be stagnant without their star.

Defense is my biggest concern for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Artie Burns was drafted in the first round, but he’s been hurt most of the preseason. You still have the same players who got burned last season ready for Kirk Cousins to pick apart one by one.

Number one is the return of Kelvin Benjamin from an ACL injury. He came back in dominating fashion, scoring a touchdown and racking up 91 receiving yards. Tight end Greg Olsen continued to do his thing, catching a team high seven passes over 73 yards.

On the ground Jonathan Stewart showed flashes of promise, but they didn’t translate onto the box score. He had 15 rushing attempts and managed 64 yards.

Despite the multitude of hits he took, Cam Newton looked like the reigning Most Valuable Player of the Year out in Denver. Cam was 18/33 with a touchdown and a pick, while also running one in for six points on his own.

Defensively you have to wonder if Josh Norman would leave a hole in the secondary. Thomas Davis and Bene Benwikere each picked off Trevor Siemian, and the defense held Denver to just one passing touchdown.

Luke Kuechly also looked like he was in midseason form with a team high 10 tackles.

While the final results Thursday don’t look good in the standings, the Panthers showed they are once again a dominant team. They’ll get a chance at redemption when they face the lowly San Francisco 49ers next Sunday.

Demaryius Thomas had four catches, but left with a hip injury. The Broncos fear Thomas could be out for an extended period of time with the hip injury, leaving them with Emmanuel Sanders to be their number one receiver.

The defense will keep the Denver Broncos in the playoff race once again, just as they did with Peyton Manning last year. Pass rush came form DeMarcus Ware, Todd Davis, and of course Von Miller in the face of Cam Newton.

Chris Harris showed he will continue to be a ballhawk at corner, picking off the reigning most valuable player Cam Newton.
