NFL roundup: Jared Goff's demotion, Bryce Petty hurt
The NFL preseason is over, and there was plenty of news at the end of it.
The Los Angeles Rams decided to trade up in the 2016 NFL Draft, landing quarterback Jared Goff with the top-overall pick. While many assumed it would take some time before the youngster would start, it may take much longer than expected.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher talked about the quarterback situation following Los Angeles’ game on Thursday night, and stated that Goff is now the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Case Keenum and Sean Mannion. Even the biggest Goff supporter has to be concerned at his alarming play. Last night, Goff was 6-of-16 for 67 yards with a touchdown and interception.
In other quarterback news, the New York Jets might have had their quarterback conundrum figured out for them. In Thursday night’s action, Bryce Petty was forced out of the contest with an injured shoulder. While Petty’s x-rays were negative, it remains unclear just how badly he is hurt.
If Petty can’t go, he might be put on Injured Reserve. That would leave the Jets with the trio of Christian Hackenberg, Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Speaking of Hackenberg, he was atrocious against the Philadelphia Eagles, going 11-of-31 for 54 yards and an interception.
Then we get to Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane. Lane is apparently following in the footsteps of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick by sitting down during the national anthem. Lane, one of the better slot corners in the game who is in the second year of his current deal, is taking a similar stance to Kaepernick. It will be interesting to see if Lane gets the same kind of media scrutiny foisted upon Kaepernick, or if people lose interest in the story.
Lastly, look for roster cuts throughout the next day and a half. Teams must be down to 53 players come Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. EST.
