NFL roundup: Rams may name Jared Goff No. 2, Case Keenum to remain starter
For the first time since Saturday, there are no NFL games to be played, but there is still plenty of news to go around.
The Los Angeles Rams selected Jared Goff with the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, expecting him to step in as the team’s starter. However, he looked extremely overmatched during the preseason, prompting the team to make him inactive in Week 1. After the Rams looked horrible against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, fans are already clamoring for Goff, who may actually be in uniform during Week 2. Head coach Jeff Fisher ruled out Goff taking over as the team’s starter, but said he may be the backup for their matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Buffalo Bills have a short week, as they face the New York Jets in an AFC East matchup on Thursday Night Football. Originally, the team was expected to be without star wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who has been experiencing discomfort in his foot since the team’s Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Watkins did not participate in the team’s regular practice, but was involved in the walk-through, and said he expects to play in Week 2.
Bills head coach Rex Ryan made headlines on Tuesday as well, as he told the New York Post that he had his lap band removed as a sign of solidarity with his brother, Rob. Rob Ryan had to have his lap band removed because of complications, and he is markedly heavier than his twin brother, Rex. Last month, Rex told ESPN that he has gained at least 30 pounds since adding his brother to his coaching staff in Buffalo.
Chris Ivory was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the off-season with the hopes of bolstering the Jags rushing attack. He was expected to team with T.J. Yeldon to form a two-headed monster in the backfield, but has instead been hospitalized for a general medical issue. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday, but there is no indication as to when he will be back with the team.
Staying with the running backs, the New Orleans Saints released C.J. Spiller on Tuesday, terminating their relationship with the back. Last year, the Saints signed Spiller to a four-year/ $16 million deal, but he was highly ineffective. The team made him inactive for Week 1, and he will now be looking for a new home in the NFL. Spiller was shocked by being cut, but said he has no hard feelings towards the organization.
