NFL Rumors: Employed Head Coaches Interested In Rams Job
The Los Angeles Rams head coach vacancy is reportedly a desirable job for currently employed NFL head coaches.
Despite already being employed in the NFL, there are reportedly head coaches around the league who are interested in the Los Angeles Rams head coach vacancy.
Per Jay Glazer of FOX, the Rams job is a desired one by currently employed head coaches who might be looking for a change of scenery.
As Glazer reports, the idea of building around No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley could be enough to make a head coach leave his current job for Los Angeles:
The Rams HC job became the most desired one by coaches (even HC w stable positions elsewhere) when they moved to LA. Still is, esp w young QB & RB to build around.
Adding to those reasons, Los Angeles is a big market that coaches would love to work in, and the team sports a talented defense led by star defensive tackle Aaron Donald.
And, as Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reports, the Rams are open to “trading” for their next head coach:
A source with knowledge of the Rams’ plans told PFT that the Rams will consider all opportunities to improve the team, specifically in response to the question of whether the Rams would attempt to acquire a current head coach from another team.
The word “trade” for a head coach is often used, but it isn’t exactly a trade. One team gives draft picks up as compensation for the other team letting its head coach out of his contract. Then it’s up to the team and the head coach to work out a new deal.
For the sake of making things easy, we refer to it as a trade anyway.
Do the Rams Have Enough to Deal for a HC?
Seeing as how the Rams are already without their 2017 first- and third-round picks after trading up to get Goff, L.A. is dealing with little resources as is to pull off a trade for a new head coach. Should this franchise make a deal with a team to snag their head coach, L.A. would be left with even less draft picks for the new hire to work with.
Perhaps the biggest name who could become available during the offseason is New Orleans Saints head coach, Sean Payton.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday that the Saints might be willing to deal Payton, and his source said it doesn’t look like it’ll require much to get him.
Whether or not Los Angeles has enough at the moment to make such a deal work is unknown. Regardless, the Rams should at least make a pitch if Payton is indeed available, as he’s exactly the big-name splash Los Angeles is looking for.
Rest assured, there will be plenty of competition for the Super Bowl-winning coach if the Saints decide to let him go.
