NFL Rumors: Geno Smith out for season with torn ACL

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Geno Smith has reportedly torn his ACL, effectively ending the fourth-year quarterback’s season.

Though the New York Jets pulled off an impressive win against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6, it came at a very costly price. Quarterback Geno Smith started the game after replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter. However, Smith exited the game early due to a knee injury. It turns out it’s a worst case scenario for the former West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback, as Smith reportedly has a torn ACL.

Smith has had a tough career so far. He missed most of last season after breaking his jaw during a fight. The former second round pick from West Virginia University might be done with the Jets following his ACL tear. It’s likely they will either want to give Bryce Petty from Baylor a chance to prove himself or they will explore other options such as Philip Rivers, should he be released or traded.

Fitzpatrick replaced Smith in the game and wound up leading the Jets to a win over the Ravens. While Smith has not done much to help his case during his time with the Jets, you still have to feel terrible for the young quarterback. Nothing has been going his way as of late. Just when he finally gets a chance to prove himself again, he gets injured.

Should the Jets decide to get rid of Smith after this season, he could find some suitors. He’s still a very talented quarterback who is quite young. While he hasn’t gotten the results desired, it’s not like he’s had much of a chance to prove himself with the Jets. His pedigree will guarantee him at least one more shot in the NFL. The Jets now have a 2-5 record for the season after their first seven games.
