The NFL regular season kicked off in thrilling fashion on Thursday night, as the Denver Broncos held on to beat the Carolina Panthers, 21–20. Many were left questioning the league's concussion protocol after Panthers quarterback Cam Newton wasn't removed from the game after being hit in the head on Carolina's final drive.

• Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall knelt during the national anthem, joining San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in protest of racial inequalities in the United States.
• The Broncos tried to trade for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Case Keenum in August, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
• Former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is "up in the air" about a potential return this season, reports Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Lynch retired during last year's Super Bowl.
• New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski might not play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, reports Conor Orr of NFL.com.
• The Pittsburgh Steelers signed guard David DeCastro to a six-year, $58 million extension, reports Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
• Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Will Fuller is expected to play in Sunday's opener against the Chicago Bears despite his nursing a hamstring injury, reports John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.
• Former 49ers tight end Bruce Miller has been charged with seven felonies for an incident in which he fought a 70-year-old man and his 29-year-old son, reports ESPN. Miller, who has been released by the 49ers, will be arraigned on Friday.
