Nick Folk gives his take on new extra point rule
The NFL passed a new extra point rule this offseason which now moves the line of scrimmage on the PAT back to the 15, effectively making it a 33-yard kick. Originally, the line of scrimmage was at the 2-yard line, where Folk is perfect from during his NFL career.
Now that the kick has been moved back, what does he think about the new rule?
"A rule's a rule," he said. "They're trying to make it more exciting, so, got to live with it."
Folk elaborated on his comments by talking about whether the approach of kickers will change now that the extra point attempt is further back.
"I think every kicker has to make every kick look the same, whether you're trying to hit an extra point or a long field goal," Folk said. "You just try to hit the light pole in the back of the uprights."
Since Folk feels that the approach won't change, he feels as if the extra point will still remain a highly successful play where kickers should encounter few problems.
"It shouldn't affect too much. I think, at the end of the year, you're going to deal with a little bit of wind, a little bit of weather—for us, especially, where Houston and Indianapolis [which play inside] will have a little bit of an advantage, if you will. Hopefully, we don't miss a playoff spot on a missed extra point at the end of the year."
It will be an interesting season in 2015 with the new extra point rules and it remains to be seen what role this new rule will factor when games, or even playoff spots are on the line.
