Patriots sign rookie S Cedric Thompson from Dolphins practice squad

The New England Patriots made a handful of moves on Tuesday, adding to their practice squad ahead of their first playoff game on Saturday. Among the moves was the signing of rookie safety Cedric Thompson from the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.

Thompson was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 draft out of Minnesota, but failed to appear in a single game this season. He was signed to Miami's practice squad on Sept. 6, one day after the team released him.

He was the only Dolphins rookie not to see time on the field this season despite safety Louis Delmas suffering a season-ending knee injury in training camp. He likely won't contribute for the Patriots in the near future given the depth at safety on the roster.

In addition to signing Thompson, the Patriots also signed wide receiver J.J. Worton to the practice squad and released wideout DeAndre Carter.
