Paxton Lynch eager to wash away bad taste of first start
Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch has not had many opportunities to play this season, and he’s eager to wash away the bad taste from start no.1…
As we alluded to earlier, the Denver Broncos are ready to insert Paxton Lynch into the starting lineup if need be this weekend in Jacksonville. That’s a given. What circumstances will have to allow for that to happen remain to be seen.
We’ve seen Trevor Siemian play hurt before, and while it was ugly, it’s clearly something the Broncos’ coaching staff and training staff has signed off on. But with Siemian in a walking boot as of Wednesday, how likely is he really to play?
The Broncos’ rookie first round pick Lynch is improving daily, getting himself ready mentally and physically, and generally just excited about getting back out on the field and proving he can do better the second time around.
“I’m definitely upset that I have a zero on the win column from my starts. Like I said, it’s day-to-day and I know that Trevor is working hard to get back out there. I’m taking the reps as I get them right now. If I have to play on Sunday, I’ll be ready.”
That’s the mentality you’re looking for from your young quarterback, and Lynch showed in the preseason and even flashes in regular season action how special of a player he can be. Coming out of college this year, there weren’t many young quarterbacks with the type of arm talent Lynch has.
The prospect of adding that to the offensive mix right now is exciting, but Lynch knows the most important thing from his first start was not any individual rep. It wasn’t how well he played overall. It was the fact that the team lost the game.
“The fact that we lost is the biggest thing to me. I really did not want to lose my first start. I want to go out there and give it another shot because I didn’t play so well my first time. I knew that I could have played better. With the opportunity that I’m getting, I’m just preparing to go out there and play as well as I can.”
That last line seems to allude to Lynch thinking he will be playing this weekend, but perhaps I’m reading too much into it.
If Lynch does get a chance to add to the win column this weekend, here’s hoping he gets one.
