Philadelphia Eagles: The curious case of the Carson Wentz deep ball
The Philadelphia Eagles have found their quarterback of the future in Carson Wentz.
The Philadelphia Eagles have solved an important problem that many teams struggle with. They’ve found their quarterback of the future in Carson Wentz. That can’t be debated. There have been some growing pains however, and now the Eagles are one game under .500. Their signal caller has thrown four touchdown passes over the course of the last seven games. “The Wentz Wagon” has officially pulled into the garage for some serious maintenance.

The questions about Wentz following the bye:
There are a couple of other elements to Wentz’s game that have come into focus. There have been too many turnovers, and a team that is in desperate need of big plays can’t honestly say they’re confident with Wentz’s deep ball.
The first three weeks of the season, Wentz threw five touchdown passes and no interceptions and the Eagles went 3-0 over that stretch. One of the highlights of the season was in the Eagles’ first game when Wentz threw a beautiful rainbow to wide receiver Nelson Agholor.
We thought, at that point, thought that an issue that had existed throught the preseason had been fixed. There were stories and video demonstrating issues with Wentz’s deep ball in practice, and we learned he had a propensity to overthrow receivers. We thought after seeing the touchdown pass to Agholor that those issues were on their way to being fixed. Maybe we were right. Maybe we spoke too soon.

What we’ve discovered:
Wentz can’t be blamed for the loss against the Detroit Lions, but even after all of the issues the Eagles faced in that game, they still had a chance to win at the end. Wentz, with plenty of time left on the clock, went deep and the pass was picked off. That was his first interception of the season. Seven more have followed since then. The Eagles have gone 2-6 following that 3-0 start. We know Wentz can spin the ball just about as good as anybody. It just gets placed in the wrong spot sometimes when he goes deep. It’s not a major issue. We’ve also seen him deliver it perfectly on occasion (and the receivers have dropped it). It’s still something that attention will be paid to.
