Pitt RB James Conner declares for NFL draft after beating cancer

Pittsburgh running back James Conner has declared for the NFL draft, a year after overcoming Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Conner announced his decision on Saturday. After missing much of the 2015 season with a torn ACL and revealing his diagnosis last December, the redshirt junior returned to the field without missing a beat, scoring 20 total touchdowns and rushing for 1,060 yards. He was the 2014 ACC player of the year.

This week, Conner was given the 2016 Disney Sports Spirit Award, recognizing the most inspirational figure in college football each year.

His 56 career touchdowns are the most by any player in ACC history. Conner will face Northwestern in the Pinstripe Bowl Dec. 28 before turning pro.
