Post-Game Pontification: Oakland Raiders vs. Indianapolis Colts

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 2:19 a.m. ET

Quick thoughts on the Oakland Raiders beating the Colts, 33-25, but losing QB Derek Carr to a broken leg.

Derek Carr has a broken fibula, and the time table for recovery could be as little as six weeks — that would be Super Bowl weekend — or as much as six months. Tough luck for the Oakland Raiders, to say the least.

Matt McGloin is next man up

Coach speak aside, it’s the current reality. I liked what McGloin said after the game, about just needing to do his job. As long as he plays within himself, he can help the team win. Showed some of it at the end of the Colts game, with a clutch throw to Cooper that iced it.

Raiders saying all the right things

From Coach Del Rio to Donald Penn, everyone is saying exactly what you would want them to say. That it sucks Carr got hurt, but the season ain’t over. It’s time for everyone to pick up their play, to help support McGloin and keep stacking up wins.

Prior to Carr injury, Offense & Defense was rolling

Through three quarters against the Colts, the Raiders were playing their most complete game to date. Well, except for Janikowski kicking magnetic footballs that kept bouncing off the uprights.

Carr, the Coach

While Derek Carr won’t be playing, I expect him to be coaching. I hope he sits in all the meetings and film sessions and helps McGloin prepare for his starts. Then be there on the sidelines or in the booth to help McGloin in game too.

Not the end of the world

Yeah, but it feels pretty close to it. The stars may be aligned, maybe not. But one thing we can be sure of, is this team will not give up. They are on a mission, let’s see if they can accomplish it.
