QB Tyrod Taylor has Bills off to strong start
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan praised Tyrod Taylor after the quarterback won his first road game as the Bills' starter.
And the Bills (2-1) bounced back from a loss to New England with a 41-14 win over Miami on Sunday.
The Bills have had promising starts before that they have not been able to sustain through the season.
This is the seventh time the Bills have had a winning record after three games since 2000, when their playoff drought began. In four of the past five seasons, the Bills have started at least 2-1.
Buffalo returns home Sunday to host the New York Giants (1-2), who rebounded from an 0-2 start to defeat the Washington Redskins on Thursday night.
Ryan said the Bills' bounce-back began when they scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of their 40-32 loss to the Patriots in Week 2.
''They showed me about the heart and resiliency and everything else,'' Ryan said. ''So I expected us to play well when we went to Miami and we certainly bounced back.''
Taylor threw three interceptions against the Patriots, but responded with a strong performance against the Dolphins, completing 21 of 29 passes for 277 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Taylor's 136.7 passer rating on Sunday was the highest by a Bills quarterback since Drew Bledsoe posted a 144.2 rating in a Sept. 14, 2003, win over Jacksonville.
Through three games, Taylor is completing 74.4 percent of his passes for 714 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Taylor is the first Bills quarterback to complete more than 70 percent of his passes and throw for at least seven touchdowns over the first three games since Jim Kelly in 1991.
The Bills are dealing with injuries to several playmakers surrounding Taylor.
Receiver Sammy Watkins' status is uncertain after he left Sunday's game in the first half because of a calf injury.
Ryan said it is ''certainly a possibility'' that Watkins will miss time with the injury.
''When you don't finish a game, most of the time, the following week, those players aren't available,'' Ryan said.
Watkins missed part of the preseason with a groin injury and had offseason surgery on his hip.
Rookie right guard John Miller also left Sunday's game with a groin injury.
Running back LeSean McCoy has started each of the first three games despite a nagging hamstring injury, but struggled Sunday, gaining just 16 yards on 11 carries. He did have a 10-yard touchdown reception.
McCoy said after the game that the hamstring injury was still affecting him.
Ryan said Monday he will consider resting McCoy if the Bills' medical staff recommends that.
''I am not going to say yeah I will rest him,'' Ryan said. ''I will let our experts look at that. Our doctors and our trainers and all that type of stuff.''
Rookie running back Karlos Williams rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Williams is the first player to score a touchdown in each of his first three career games since teammate Percy Harvin accomplished the feat in 2009 while playing for the Minnesota Vikings.
''We have got plenty of weapons,'' Ryan said. ''But it will be fun once we get everybody about 100 percent.''
Ryan said safety Aaron Williams is still ''stiff and sore''.
Williams did not play against the Dolphins after he injured his neck in the loss to the Patriots.
