Quarterback Brad Sorensen released by Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have released quarterback Brad Sorensen for the second time before the start of the 2016 National Football League season.

By now, fans of the Minnesota Vikings know that the team is struggling to find some capable passers to sit behind Shaun Hill for the 2016 season. In order to allow Hill to sit out the final preseason game, the team signed Brad Sorensen, who they released during the earlier round of cuts.

Sorensen played more than a full half of football against the Rams on Thursday night, but didn’t do enough to earn a longer look with the team. News came down today that he was released by the team despite their need for quarterbacks.

ESPN’s Ben Goessling reported the transaction on Twitter, listing Adam Schefter as his source for the information.

This transaction leaves only Shaun Hill and Joel Stave as the two healthy quarterbacks on the roster. Of course, the hope is that Taylor Heinicke will be able to return and play at a high level if needed, but this does mean that the team’s statement on wanting to pick up a quarterback either through trade or free agency is accurate.

Now, the Minnesota Vikings roster sits at 74 players. They will need to release 21 more players to reach the 53 man roster limit necessary by Tuesday’s deadline. In addition, one more player will need to be released to make room for the new quarterback when he is signed, meaning 22 more players will find themselves unemployed from the Vikings soon.

Sadly, the release of all these young players is being overshadowed by the situation at quarterback, where general manager Rick Spielman has already said that he will make a transaction, but the move will not jeopardize the future of the Minnesota Vikings franchise.

Best of luck to Brad Sorensen going forward. It is great that he was able to step in during the final preseason game against the Rams and help out a team struggling for depth at quarterback. Hopefully, he can get another look from the Minnesota Vikings or another team in the future.
