Redskins Injury Update: DeSean Jackson And Jordan Reed Sit Out Practice
DeSean Jackson and Jordan Reed sat out practice on Thursday. Should the Redskins be worried about that?
The Washington Redskins are preparing for an upcoming matchup with the Detroit Lions. The team appears to have an advantage over their NFC North opponent, but they may be forced to go in slightly shorthanded once again. Two of their top weapons in the receiving game, Jordan Reed and DeSean Jackson, sat out practice on Thursday. This news was confirmed by Jay Gruden and the Redskins Twitter account.
#Redskins TE Jordan Reed (concussion) and WR DeSean Jackson (shoulder) did not practice today, Gruden says.

The Redskins need to hope that at least one of these players is healthy enough to play against the Lions. Otherwise, their advantage in the passing game will dwindle a little bit.

Reed’s availability is a bigger question mark than Jackson’s at the moment. The star tight end is still looking to recover from a concussion he suffered early last week, and he has yet to get clearance to play. Concussions are extremely temperamental injuries, so his status will remain unclear leading up to the game. The fact is that Reed has suffered at least five concussions during his career, so it may take longer for him to recover from the injury.
Should Reed miss this week’s game, Vernon Davis will continue to be his replacement. Davis played well in the last game, catching 2 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown, so he will not be a major downgrade. Still, he is not quite the matchup nightmare that Reed would have been against the Lions linebackers.
As for Jackson, it seems like he has a better chance at playing. The veteran receiver is nursing a sore shoulder, but unless it worsens over the next couple of days he should suit up. He will likely be matched up against Darius Slay, which will be tough. Still, that would be a better option for the team than having Pierre Garcon against Slay. If Garcon were neutralized, then Jamison Crowder would be the only top flight receiving option for the team.
Moving forward, the Redskins have to keep tabs on these injuries. It would not be surprising to see Jackson play this week, but the team should still monitor his status. As for Reed, it may be beneficial to hold him out the extra week. Just to be on the safe side.
