Report: Adrian Peterson's reworked contract worth $44 million over three years
The Minnesota Vikings and star running back Adrian Peterson agreed to restructure the final three years of his current contract on Tuesday. Under the terms of his old deal, Peterson was due $44.75 million over that span.
Now, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that Peterson's reworked deal pays $44 million over the next three years. Although the total sum of his new contract is $750,000 cheaper than his old one, according to PFT, it requires the Vikings to make decisions early in the 2016 and 2017 league years through strategically placed roster bonuses.
In other words, if the Vikings choose not to pay Peterson after either of the next two seasons, the All-Pro running back will have every opportunity to find something similar on the open market.
According to Pro Football Talk, Peterson's base salary for 2015 is $12.75 million. That figure dips to $7.75 million in 2016 before coming back up to $11.75 million in 2017.
Peterson, 30, played only one game in 2014, before spending the remainder of the season on the the NFL's Exempt/Commissioner's Permission list for his involvement in a child-abuse case. Still regarded as the best back in football, Peterson projects to play a major role in the Vikings' offense this season.
