Report: Broncos' Stewart, Marshall fined for Cam Newton hits
The NFL fined Denver Broncos safety Darian Stewart and linebacker Brandon Marshall for their hits on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton during the season opener on Thursday, according to multiple media reports.
Stewart will be fined $18,231 for his hit. Stewart was flagged for roughing the passer with less than a minute to go in Denver's 21–20 victory, but the flag was not enforced because Newton was penalized for intentional grounding on the same play.
Marshall's hit came in the third quarter of the game and he will be fined $24,309 and was not flagged for his hit on Newton. Marshall's fine is likely for impermissible use of the helmet, which includes illegal launching.
The NFL has said that medical personnel reviewed video of Stewart's hit on Newton and concluded that the concussion protocol was met, but will review how the Panthers' medical team handled the hit because it wants to make sure that the protocol is being "uniformly applied across all 32 teams."
