Report: Cardinals sign veteran sack specialist Dwight Freeney

The Arizona Cardinals reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with veteran defensive end Dwight Freeney on Monday.

Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowler at defensive end and outside linebacker, will serve as a situational pass rusher, according to reports from ESPN and the NFL Network.

The 35-year-old Freeney has registered 111.5 career sacks in 13 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers. He had 3 1/2 sacks while appearing in 16 games last season with the Chargers.

The Cardinals have a need at outside linebacker after Alex Okafor suffered a calf injury in Sunday's 42-17 victory over the Detroit Lions. The NFL Network, citing a source, reported that Okafor could be sidelined up to six weeks with a strain.

Backup linebacker Kenny Demens also was injured Sunday, telling reporters he thinks he tore a knee ligament.
