Report: Colts DT Arthur Jones' ankle injury requires surgery
It appears the Indianapolis Colts will be without defensive tackle Arthur Jones for an extended period of time once again.
According to a report from NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Jones needs surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left ankle. The six-year pro suffered the injury during last Saturday's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams.
Rapoport notes that depending on whether doctors find joint damage during surgery, Jones may be a candidate to be placed on short-term injured reserve with a designation to return, which would make him eligible to return at the season's halfway point. Otherwise, he will likely be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Last season, Jones missed six games with a right ankle sprain that hampered him much of the year.
The 29-year-old Jones, who signed a five-year, $33-million contract with Colts in 2014, was expected to be a key contributor to the team's emphasis on stopping the run this season.
The Colts will turn to Montori Hughes, Zach Kerr and rookie Henry Anderson in Jones' absence.
