Report: Darren Sharper to plead guilty to three rape charges

Published Jun. 15, 2015 11:23 a.m. ET

Former NFL defensive back Darren Sharper is expected to plead guilty to rape charges in New Orleans, Andy Grimm of NOLA.com reports. Sharper will receive a 20-year prison sentence, per the report, for "drugging and sexually assaulting" three women.

"But with credit for good behavior behind bars, Sharper will serve nine years, the bulk of it in a federal prison," Grimm reports for NOLA.com. "He then will face a lifetime on probation as a sex offender upon his release."

Sharper started his NFL career as a second-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 1997. He played his first eight seasons there and recorded 36 of his 63 career interceptions as a Packer. Sharper then spent four seasons as a Minnesota Viking (2005-2008), before becoming a Super Bowl champion with the New Orleans Saints in 2009.
