Report: J.J. Watt undergoes sports hernia surgery

Published Jan. 13, 2016 11:33 a.m. ET

Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt had successful sports hernia surgery on Tuesday, repairing a groin injury that hampered him late in the season, according to a report.

Via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Watt traveled to Philadelphia where noted sports hernia specialist Dr. William Meyers performed the procedure. Meyers also operated on Watt's teammate, Arian Foster, after the running back suffered a groin injury in August.

Watt played in six games down the stretch with the injury before being forced from Houston's 30-0 playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the third quarter after a block from Chiefs offensive take Eric Fisher.

The NFL's leader in sacks with 17.5, Watt is expected to back in time for Houston's offseason workouts in the spring.
