Report: Kelvin Benjamin overweight at OTAs

Published Jun. 18, 2015 2:31 a.m. ET

The 6-foot-5 wideout played his rookie season in 2014 at around 245 pounds and reportedly came into spring workouts about 10 pounds over weight. That would put him in the mid-250s, which is pretty ridiculous for a wide receiver.

Benjamin has suffered injuries to both hamstrings during OTAs and has barely been able to participate. Head coach Ron Rivera believes the injuries have come as a result of poor conditioning.

If this was an isolated incident it wouldn’t be a big deal, but Benjamin has a history of serious weight fluctuations. He showed up for his freshman year at Florida State 20 pounds overweight and had to redshirt as a result.

Benjamin is a big wideout, but 255 pounds is far too big. As a result of his injuries, he won’t be able to play until the Panthers start training camp in late July.

The 24-year-old had a great rookie season, playing in all 16 games while catching 73 passes for 1,008 yards. He also had nine touchdowns and paired with Greg Olsen to be an excellent one-two pass-catching punch for quarterback Cam Newton.
