The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated one of the best teams in the NFC Sunday with the help of a third-string quarterback, and that same third-stringer is expected to be named the starter for at least one game.

Aditi Kinkhabwala of reports that Michael Vick has a hamstring injury that he expects will force him to miss his team’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs next weekend.

If Ben Roethlisberger is cleared to return, he will obviously assume his position in the starting lineup. If not, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin would have a decision to make even if Vick is able to play.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones completed 8-of-12 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Vick on Sunday. He provided a spark for the offense and immediately clicked with wide receiver Martavis Bryant, who caught an 88-yard touchdown pass and added another spectacular grab for a score.

Vick, on the other hand, helped the Steelers beat the San Diego Chargers in overtime last week but has not played well. He takes bad sacks and his throws are extremely inaccurate. Jones is a better passer and could be a better fit in Pittsburgh’s offense.

Ideally, Roethlisberger will be cleared and all will return to normal. But if not, Jones has the support of at least one veteran teammate. The Steelers were very encouraged by his performance against Arizona.
