Report: New finger wouldn't help Pierre-Paul return to football
Jason Pierre-Paul won't be getting a prosthetic finger to help him return to football. That's still the stuff of science fiction, according to doctors contacted by the New York Post.
The New York Giants defensive lineman apparently is still recovering at a Miami hospital after a July 4 fireworks mishap cost him his right index finger. However, there is only so much modern medicine can do at this point.
New Jersey hand surgeon Kevin Roenbeck told the Post: "There is no Skywalker technology yet."
For those who don't recall Luke's new hand, here's the Star Wars clip:
Pierre-Paul may want a prosthetic finger, but it would be more a matter of how it looks in general than how it works when it comes to football.
"You cannot get a functional prosthesis for that kind of injury," said another hand surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Garrod of the South Florida Hand and Orthopaedic Center. "Prosthetics wouldn't make any improvements."
Former Chargers team doctor David Chao said: "You couldn't anchor the finger on strong enough to make it functional for football. It would be just sticking out there."
Meanwhile, Pierre-Paul also reportedly suffered a severe injury to his thumb and is receiving skin grafts. He might not be able to try returning to football for three months or more, doctors said.
So, yes, we'll say it: He really needs The Force to be with him.
