Report: Paxton Lynch to make first NFL start vs Atlanta Falcons
Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch will reportedly make his first start against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon in Week 5.
The Denver Broncos moved up in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft to select Memphis Tigers quarterback Paxton Lynch as their new franchise signal caller. Lynch wasn’t expected to play in 2016, but an injury to starter Trevor Siemian in Week 4 forced Lynch into the Broncos’ Week 4 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It seems now that Lynch will make his first NFL start. 9NEWS Mike Klis first broke the news of Lynch getting his first NFL start. Siemian hurt the AC joint in his shoulder and won’t be able to go in the Broncos’ Week 5 home game versus the Atlanta Falcons.
Many have tabbed the Falcons/Broncos game as the best game on the Week 5 slate. It is a clash of the titans between Atlanta’s high-powered offense and the vaunted Denver defense. Starting a rookie quarterback against a 3-1 team is a bold move, but Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak knows what he’s doing.
Kubiak is a quarterback whisperer and will put Lynch in opportune situations to succeed. He is very familiar with Atlanta’s two coordinators: offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Richard Smith.
Shanahan is the son of Mike Shanahan, Kubiak’s former head coach in Denver. The younger Shanahan had his first offensive coordinator gig while Kubiak was the head coach of the Houston Texans.
Smith was a part of the Broncos’ defensive staff before Kubiak’s arrival. In short, Denver knows exactly what Atlanta is going to try to do defensively. Starting a rookie quarterback isn’t ideal for most teams, but most teams are the Broncos.
Where Lynch can get into trouble is with the errant pass. Atlanta isn’t great defensively, but can create turnovers for head coach Dan Quinn. Ball control will be crucial in Lynch’s first NFL start.
