Report: Raiders to let RB Latavius Murray test free-agent market

Published Feb. 26, 2017 11:45 a.m. ET

The Oakland Raiders were surprisingly good on the ground last season, rushing for the sixth-most yards in the NFL. Latavius Murray was a big part of that, but he may not be in the team’s future plans.

According to ESPN, the Raiders are expected to let Murray hit free agency in a few weeks, but could be open to a return after he tests the market.

Murray rushed for 788 yards in 14 games last season, finding the end zone 12 times. That came after he racked up 1,066 yards in 2015, cementing his role as the starting running back in Oakland.

While he may not be one of the best running backs in the NFL, he is among the top backs available this offseason. He joins Eddie Lacy, Rex Burkhead and possibly Adrian Peterson in that regard, figuring to sign a long-term contract elsewhere.

The Raiders do have DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard in the backfield, but neither are considered three-down backs. Murray brings a physical presence that Richard and Washington don’t, which makes it somewhat surprising that the Raiders would be willing to let him walk.

As for teams that could be possible suitors for Murray, the Giants, Vikings and Buccaneers all make sense.
