Rex Ryan gives Patriots more bulletin board material
by Cameron McDonough
Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan is a never ending giver of bulletin-board material, especially when it comes to the Patriots. That trend continued this week as the Bills prepare to host New England on Sunday, and whether he liked it or not, Dion Lewis was included.
Lewis had a breakout game in the Patriots’ 28-21 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. The running back ran for 69 yards on 15 attempts, and also picked up 51 yards through the air. But Ryan had some trouble remembering his name Monday when asked about the Patriots’ “no name” running backs.
Ryan was asked about Lewis again Wednesday during a conference call with the New England media, and the Bills coach managed to throw some more shade his way.
“Well, he’s no Jim Nantz,” Ryan said jokingly. “What’s funny is, what I’m saying is I have a lot of things to be concerned with, but the backup running back – look, I’m going to recognize him. … (LeGarrette) Blount’s the main runner.”
Lewis was asked about Ryan’s comments Tuesday, but he wouldn’t return the bulletin-board material back Ryan’s way.
With Blount back after serving a one-game suspension, it’s unclear what Lewis’ role will be go forward. But he certainly proved his worth in Week 1, especially as a third-down back. And if he has a big game Sunday, maybe Ryan will remember his name in the post-game press conference.
“He can try to make me learn his name, I guess,” Ryan said. “Go ahead.”
