Sammy Watkins could miss weeks with foot injury

Bills receiver Sammy Watkins could miss multiple weeks after re-aggravating his surgically repaired foot during Sunday’s loss to the Ravens.

The Bills lost their season opener to the Ravens, but they might have lost more then the game. According to the New York Daily News, receiver Sammy Watkins could be out for a few weeks with a foot injury. X-rays were taken after the game but did not reveal a break.

Watkins had surgery on his foot last year after suffering a break and was thought to be 100 percent heading into the season. However, he caught just four passes for 43 yards in Sunday’s game and never truly looked like himself.

So what does this mean for the Bills if their star receiver is out for an extended stretch?

If Watkins is sidelined for multiple weeks as expected, the Bills are going to need other people to step up. The likely candidate to take over as the Bills’ number one is Robert Woods, who had four catches for 20 yards against the Ravens.

A more realistic option is to really lean on tight end Charles Clay and running back LeSean McCoy. Clay is a playmaker at the tight end position. He doesn’t put up Gronk type numbers, but he’s a solid player that can get open for an offense. McCoy, meanwhile, has been one of the quickest and most explosive players in the NFL for years. The only problem here, of course, is that McCoy built that reputation in Philly, and hasn’t shown that ability so far in Buffalo.

While unlikely, the Bills had a chance to shock the world and make the playoffs for the first time in 16 years. Now, all they can do is try to keep their head above water until their best player returns.

The Bills will face the Jets on Thursday night.
