Sammy Watkins may need season-ending surgery

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins  has already been placed on IR with an ongoing foot issue, but the news got more bleak Sunday morning.

Heading into the season opener, offseason foot surgery foot surgery seemed to mostly be in the rearview mirror for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins. But a dismal outing against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 (four catches for 43 yards) gave way to reports of foot soreness, a questionable status for Week 2 against the New York Jets and a missed game in Week 3.

Watkins was officially ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots on Friday, and soon after that he was placed on injured reserve. That brings an absence of at least eight weeks, but on Sunday morning the news around Watkins and his troublesome left foot took a turn for the worse.

Dr. Robert Anderson is a noted foot specialist, and the meeting/evaluation will help determine if Watkins needs another surgery on his foot. A second surgery would be season-ending, and leave the Bills without quarterback Tyrod Taylor’s top target from here on out. But Watkins only had six catches for 63 yards in the two games he has played, so Buffalo’s offense has mostly been without him thus far anyway.

Watkins’ absence, extended or now for the remainder of the season, makes the Bills even thinner at wide receiver. Greg Salas (groin) will also miss Sunday’s game, so Marquise Goodwin and Walter Powell will be behind new No.1 option Robert Woods in the pecking order against New England. Goodwin and Powell have combined for six receptions so far this season. So tight end Charles Clay, who is dealing with a knee injury and went catch-less last week, is now the clear No. 2 target for Taylor.
