Buffalo Bills receiver Sammy Watkins has been optimistic that he will be back on the field in time for training camp after having offseason foot surgery, but the team might hold him out of practice until the regular season begins.

Watkins told ESPN Saturday that he hopes to be ready for the start of training camp but isn't sure if the Bills medical staff will clear him.

"You never know," Watkins said when asked if he will be given the green light to participate early in training camp. "Be very skeptical about it. Hopefully I'll be back [for camp]. If I'm not, then cool. Get ready for the first game.

"Right now I feel good, but I got to go back and train and rehab. Hopefully it feels good when I run and everything like that. I haven't ran in three or four weeks. Hopefully I'll feel good about it and I'll be on the field in training camp."

Watkins, who had surgery in April to repair a broken bone in his foot, said earlier this month that he would "definitley be available" for training camp.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan recently indicated that the team will excercise caution with Watkins and that they don't yet know exactly when he will return to action.

"We will definitely be smart with him also, but like I said, I am sure he is going to get some work [in camp]," Ryan said. "It is just we don't have a definitive date."
