Sammy Watkins returned to the field Sunday after missing three of the past four games, and he showed just why he's a huge part of the Buffalo Bills' offense.
Watkins erupted for a career day, catching eight passes for 168 yards and a touchdown and routinely beat Pro Bowl corner Brent Grimes. He and Tyrod Taylor were on the same page all day, and incredibly, Watkins was the only Bills receiver to catch a pass. He accounted for 92.8 percent of the team's receiving yards, which is the highest mark since Qadry Ismail in 1999.
After the game, Watkins credited his performance to his actions before the game.
"I live by the film," Watkins said via the team's official site. "I watched [Grimes] in every game from 2-3 years ago and watched how he plays press and doesn't switch it up. So I set it up to keep taking him inside, keep selling it. I beat him inside on the first throw, so I knew when in doubt that he's going to jump inside if I do it. So I double-moved him inside, sold him with my body. He jumped, and I just put my hand up, and Tyrod delivered the ball."
Grimes, who's a top cornerback in the league, looked like he was no match for Watkins on Sunday. Though some of his performance can be attributed to watching film, Watkins' physical ability was also a big factor.
Though Grimes is a great defender, Watkins will certainly have his hands full this week. The Bills take on the Jets on Thursday night, which means Watkins will be lined up against Darrelle Revis. A visit to Revis Island should be a good test for the young receiver.
