San Diego Chargers: Joey Bosa proving more valuable than anticipated
The San Diego Chargers are the best 3-4 team in the NFL right now, and the emergence of rookie Joey Bosa is proving he’s a huge reason why…
What in the world is going on with the San Diego Chargers?
Joey Bosa, that’s what.
Bosa is proving after a tumultuous offseason of holding out and subsequent injuries that his presence in the San Diego defense was worth the wait. After the Atlanta Falcons racked up a ton of sacks against the hapless offensive line of the Denver Broncos, they got a taste of their own medicine with the relentless rush of Bosa and others on the San Diego defense.
Bosa had two sacks against Matt Ryan and the Falcons, helping the Chargers mount a fourth quarter/overtime comeback on the road to get their third victory of the season.

Along with the presence of Bosa on the defensive line, the Chargers have been getting things done offensively with a guy that many thought was just ‘another’ Wisconsin running back, former first round pick Melvin Gordon.
Gordon was a monster against the Falcons, not necessarily ripping off a ton of big runs (just 68 yards on 22 carries) but he had two rushing touchdowns, six catches, 53 yards as a receiver, and another touchdown.

Gordon has 10 total touchdowns this season, and has become a major factor for this team when many weren’t really expecting much outside of San Diego, their fans, and that organization.
The emergence of these two guys has really given the Chargers some new life. This team was 1-4. They are now 3-4, which doesn’t necessarily look great, but the Chargers were unquestionably the best 1-4 team in the league going into their game on Thursday Night Football against the Broncos.
It seemed like every week was another fourth quarter meltdown, or the Chargers would have had one loss at the most in the early part of the season. Even in their win against the Broncos, Denver had a chance to tie the game with a Hail Mary at the end.
Joey Bosa and company are making sure those fourth quarter collapses don’t happen, and while things have certainly not been perfect in San Diego, they are unquestionably a tougher team with the third overall pick in the draft in the lineup.
The top of this year’s draft, sans those who haven’t played, are showing some nice early returns. Bosa’s development in San Diego is a welcome sight for Chargers fans.
