San Francisco 49ers: OT Joe Staley Not Surprised by Anthony Davis Retirement
San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley wasn’t exactly shocked by the sudden retirement of fellow lineman Anthony Davis on Monday.
Former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis retired for the second time in as many years on Monday, likely viewing concussions and head injuries as the primary reason.
Davis’ former teammate, veteran left tackle Joe Staley, was not surprised by Davis’ actions.
“He wanted to retire, so he retired,” Staley said of Davis when asked by the media (h/t Kevin Jones of KNBR 680).
When asked if Davis’ retirement was surprising to the locker room, Staley simply responded, “No.”

Davis tweeted the following message out after his retirement:
During Davis’ first retirement last year, the former first-round pick of the Niners called out Staley for not holding up to his man, Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor, on a running play.
Staley later noted he would welcome Davis back, and all signs pointed to the 49ers being OK with a return from retirement.
Davis didn’t secure his starting job at right tackle though. San Francisco second-year pro Trent Brown had already earned that accolade. The 49ers considered Davis at guard, but he wound up appearing on the team’s depth chart as a backup tackle.
The majority of players within the locker room don’t seem overly shocked at Davis’ second retirement. At least according to Staley.
And maybe the team isn’t particularly concerned anyway.
