Seahawks lose draft pick for violating offseason workout rules

Published Sep. 19, 2016 1:56 p.m. ET

The NFL has penalized the Seattle Seahawks for violating offseason workout rules and the team will lose a 2017 fifth-round draft pick and the first week of 2017 organized team activities, the league announced.

The Seahawks were fined $400,000. Head coach Pete Carroll was fined $200,000.

The league announced that during the Seahawks's OTA on June 6,2016, players engaged in “excessive on-field physical contact, which is expressly prohibited in all offseason workouts under the NFL-NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement. The prohibition is one of several measures by the NFL and NFLPA implemented to enhance player safety by limiting contact during offseason workout programs. The rules also help to prevent any team from gaining a competitive advantage.”

All OTA sessions are voluntary and players are not allowed to hit or line up 11-on-11.

The Seahawks were previously docked two OTAs for a rules violation in 2012.
