Son of former Chiefs QB Steve Bono is starring for UCLA baseball
Kansas City fans remember Steve Bono under center for the Chiefs in the mid-1990s.
Maybe they'll get to know Bono's son across the parking lot with the Royals.
Christoph Bono is piecing together an impressive baseball career at UCLA, the school his father once led to a Fiesta Bowl title in 1984. The center fielder been equally impressive guiding the Bruins to two postseason berths in the last three years, including a College World Series win in his freshman year.
Christoph Bono could've followed in his father's quarterbacking footsteps. But, like his father once did, he had to choose which path to pursue before college.
“It was a tough decision and I was hoping to play both sports for two years knowing that at some point after that I would have to make a decision and pick one,” Bono told his hometown Norristown (Pa.) Times Herald. “My dad had the same situation here. He obviously stuck with football, but was also on the baseball team and it got to the point the football coach (Terry Donahue) told him that if he wanted a chance to be the starting quarterback you need to come to spring ball.”
The younger Bono said he's confident he made the right decision. So are pro scouts who could be looking at Bono like they once did with his childhood friend, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson.
When all is said and done, Christoph Bono could translate his stellar UCLA tenure into a pro career -- just like his father did years ago.
