Source: Geno Smith-IK Enemkpali fight was over money
Why did IK Enemkpali break Geno Smith's jaw?
It seems as though the problem between the two New York Jets players started over a $600 plane ticket, according to multiple reports and FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Mike Garafolo.
Brian Costell of the New York Post and ESPN's Adam Schefter report that Enemkpali hosted a football camp at Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, Texas, on July 11 and wanted Smith to attend. Enemkpali apparently bought a $600 plane ticket for Smith, but the day before the camp, a close friend of the latter's was killed in a motorcycle accident in South Florida. Smith didn't attend the camp.
Enemkpali wanted Smith to reimburse him for the cost of the plane ticket, which Smith agreed to do. However, as of Tuesday, Smith had not repaid the money and the two players had words in the locker room.
One thing apparently led to another and Enemkpali punched Smith in the jaw. Smith did not retaliate and according to Costello, said something to the effect of "not here" and left the locker room.
"Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation," Enemkpali said in a statement. "I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets."
