New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated on Wednesday, FOX Sports 1's NFL insider Mike Garafolo confirmed.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news.

Pierre-Paul, 26, discussed several options over the past few days to save the finger, according to Garafolo. Only a portion of the finger was initially lost, but amputation was deemed to have the fewest complications.

No further amputations are expected as of right now and the hope is that Pierre-Paul will miss only a few months, per Garafolo.

Pierre-Paul sustained the injury in a fireworks accident on July 4.

The defensive end turned away Giants staff members who tried to visit him in the hospital the past few days, sources told Garafolo.

Pierre-Paul, who has yet to sign his $14.8 million franchise tag, was involved in a highly public negotiation over a contract extension this offseason.

The Giants' veterans report to training camp on July 31.

Selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Pierre-Paul didn't start any games his rookie season. He had a breakout year in 2011, posting a career-high 16 1/2 sacks and playing a key role in helping the Giants beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Pierre-Paul has 42 career sacks, including 12 1/2 last season.

Pierre-Paul isn't the only NFL player to suffer a fireworks-related injury this Fourth of July. Bucs cornerback C.J. Wilson reportedly lost two fingers in an accident.
