'South Park' tackling Washington Redskins name controversy in new season

Published Sep. 22, 2014 7:37 a.m. ET

The controversy over the Washington Redskins name isn't going away any time soon despite the NFL's many scandals taking over the headlines in recent weeks.

In fact, a good chunk of people with no interest in football are about to be exposed to the debate over whether the use of the Redskins name should be considered offensive.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of "South Park," are set to skewer the team over its use of the word in an upcoming episode of the highly satirical show, currently heading into its 18th season.

A teaser trailer aired during Sunday's Redskins-Eagles game, though it reportedly was limited to the Washington, D.C. market.

In the trailer, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder is depicted as furious at Eric Cartman for naming his new company the Washington Redskins, taking advantage of the trademark protection on the term being rescinded after being deemed offensive.

Come to think of it, with all we've seen in the last couple of weeks, "South Park" could probably fill a season with nothing but NFL-related episodes.

It's certainly not the first time "South Park" has touched on sports topics. Penn State, steroids, Lance Armstrong and plenty of others have been parodied over the years.

And who can forget "Baseketball," a feature film Stone and Parker made shortly after their Comedy Central show took off.
