Spencer Ware, LDT not at Chiefs practice

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that both running back Spencer Ware and guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif will not participate in Wednesday’s practice.

Head coach Andy Reid strolled to the podium during Wednesday’s press conference and gave some interesting news. Despite stating on Sunday that no injuries occurred outside of Sam Barrington tweaking a hamstring, the Chiefs will be missing some key parts at practice.

Kansas City isn’t with running back Spencer Ware or guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif on Wednesday, with the duo struggling with both a sprained toe and high ankle sprain, respectively. The injury to Ware shouldn’t be a cause for concern, although the LDT ankle situation could be.

If LDT misses time, this is a blow. He has been playing some very good football in recent weeks, dating back to the preseason. Without him, it is expected that Zach Fulton would be the starter. Fulton is a decent player and certainly capable of starting in a pinch, but he does not have the upside of LDT.

As for Jamaal Charles, we continue to get updates that say he is moving closer to getting on the field. Charles was not able to go in Week 1 while still recovering from a torn ACL he sustained 11 months ago, but Reid seems optimistic that he’ll be back soon.

Finally, Reid talked about putting Tamba Hali on the so-called pitch count again. Hali played more than half the snaps in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers, so look for that workload to be about the same this Sunday versus the Houston Texans.

Here’s to hoping the Chiefs get healthier throughout the week. Kansas City will need to play better if its wants to run its mark to 2-0, something it hasn’t been since 2013.
