Super Bowl moment No. 10: Garo Yepremian's gaffe

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:59 p.m. ET

As we count down to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Calif., it's time to look back on the magical and memorable moments in the 49 previous Super Bowls. FOX Sports senior NFL writer Alex Marvez has ranked the 50 greatest moments in the big game's big history, and every weekday from now until Feb. 7 we'll unveil the latest addition to our countdown. Today, we look back at moment No. 10, when Garo Yepremian's odd gaffe in Super Bowl VII become a moment that would live in infamy.

Garo Yepremian was voted to the NFL's 1970s All-Decade team for his kicking prowess with the Miami Dolphins. But the play for which he will be remembered most is one of the league's all-time biggest bloopers.

When his 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked, Yepremian scampered to grab the football. His subsequent attempt to pass was comically awful.

After the ball slipped from his hand, Yepremian batted it into the air like a volleyball set.

Redskins defensive back Mike Bass snared the fumble and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown that cut Miami's lead to seven points with 2:07 remaining. Yepremian could laugh about it later because the Dolphins ultimately won to complete the only perfect season in NFL history.

Here are highlights from Super Bowl VII.

Final score: Miami 14, Washington 7
