Super Bowl moment No. 47: Timmy Smith's moment in the sun

Published Dec. 3, 2015 10:00 a.m. ET

As we count down to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, it's time to look back on the magical and memorable moments in the 49 previous Super Bowls. FOX Sports senior NFL writer Alex Marvez has ranked the 50 greatest moments in the big game's big history, and every weekday from now until Feb. 7 we'll unveil the latest addition to our countdown. Coming in at No. 47, Timmy Smith goes off on the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII.

An obscure rookie seventh-round pick from Texas Tech, Timmy Smith received his first NFL start on the league's biggest stage because of an injury suffered by George Rodgers.

Smith responded with the greatest rushing performance in Super Bowl history, registering 204 yards and two touchdowns. Smith's most memorable carry was a 58-yard scoring jaunt on a counter-gap play that marked one of five touchdowns posted by Washington in the second quarter.

Unfortunately, Smith let quick success get to his head. He was out of the league three years later because of a poor work ethic and disconcerting off-field behavior.

Final score: Washington 42, Denver 10

Quarterback Doug Williams helped the Washington Redskins romp in Super Bowl XXII against the Denver Broncos.
