Super Wild Card Weekend highlights: Jags stun Chargers; 49ers rout Seahawks

Updated Jan. 15, 2023 12:17 a.m. ET

NFL Super Wild Card Weekend is off to a wild start, as Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars took down Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers, 31-30, in the third-largest comeback in NFL postseason history.

After falling in a 27-0 hole right out of the gate — in large part due to Lawrence's three first-quarter turnovers — the Jaguars came out swinging in the second half, securing the home victory with a last-second field goal.

Rookie third-string quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers also punched their ticket to the divisional round Saturday, cruising to an impressive 41-23 home win over Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers are now 6-2 in the wild-card round in the Super Bowl era and 4-0 since 2002. They have now won 26 consecutive playoff games when having a lead of 10 points or more.

Here are the highlights!

Power plays

Jacksonville got off to a rough start in this one. Lawrence threw an interception on the Jags' opening drive, putting the Chargers in the red zone right out of the gate.

Two plays after the turnover, Austin Ekeler punched in a 13-yard touchdown for the Bolts, good for a quick 7-0 lead.

Double trouble

Misfortune struck the Jaguars once again on their second possession, as Lawrence threw his second pick of the first quarter. Heading into Saturday, Jacksonville is 2-12 in Lawrence's NFL career when he throws an interception.

On the move

The Chargers capitalized on the turnover, as Herbert & Co. charged downfield with urgency. The Bolts added a field goal to take a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Hat trick

The Jags went three-and-out on their next drive. Lawrence followed that up by throwing his third pick of the first quarter. Once again, the Chargers took advantage, as Ekeler punched in his second score of the night. Just like that, it was 17-0.

Pulling away

Herbert hit tight end Gerald Everett for a 9-yard score to put the Chargers up 24-0 midway through the second quarter.

Shutout avoided

Lawrence connected with tight end Evan Engram – who set single-season franchise records for catches and receiving yards by a tight end this season – for a dazzling 9-yard score just before the break to make it a 20-point game, 27-7.

Within arm's reach

The Jags came up with back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to close the gap.

First, Marvin Jones Jr. came up with a short score, followed by Lawrence tossing a 39-yard strike to a wide-open Zay Jones. That made it a 10-point game, 30-20, headed into the fourth quarter.

Chaos!

After being down by 27 points, the Jags roared back in the final frame to pull within two points. Lawrence hooked up with Christian Kirk for a 9-yard score and then added a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 30-28.

Lawrence is just the second player in NFL history to have four touchdown passes and four interceptions in a single postseason game, joining Ben Roethlisberger.

Comeback win!

In the end, it all came down to Jags kicker Riley Patterson, who nailed a 36-yard field goal to secure the win.

San Francisco 49ers 41, Seattle Seahawks 23

Setting the tone

After the Seahawks went three-and-out on their opening possession, the Niners charged downfield with ease on their first drive, which ended with a field goal and an early 3-0 lead.

Finding a rhythm

Once again, Seattle went three-and-out on its following possession.

Then, San Francisco extended its lead to 10-0 after going 85 yards in five plays. Christian McCaffrey started the drive with a monster 68-yard rush, capping it off by reeling in a short touchdown pass from Purdy.

On the hunt

The Seahawks closed the gap early in the second quarter, 10-7, thanks to a 7-yard score from Kenneth Walker.

New leader!

Seattle took a 14-13 lead on the following drive, courtesy of a jaw-dropping 50-yard score from DK Metcalf.

Both teams traded field goals before the break to keep it a one-point game, 17-16.

Star power

Purdy punched in a 1-yard score midway through the third quarter to put the Niners back on top, 23-17.

Sealing the deal

The Niners continued to pour it on as the fourth quarter got underway.

After a costly Seahawks fumble, Elijah Mitchell came up with a 7-yard score on the ensuing drive, followed up by a smooth two-point conversion from star tight end George Kittle to put the home team up 31-17.

Dropping dimes

The Niners came up with their third touchdown on three consecutive possessions, thanks to the quick feet of Deebo Samuel. Just like that, Purdy & Co. took a 38-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Too little, too late

Smith connected with Metcalf for a quick score late in the final frame to close the gap slightly, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback, and things ended there, 41-23, after a failed two-point conversion.
