Take Carson Wentz's Week 1 performance with a grain of salt
Carson Wentz looked good in Week 1, but can he continue to perform at a high level?
The Philadelphia Eagles started the 2016 season off with a 29-10 win over the Cleveland Browns and, without a doubt, Carson Wentz had a lot to do with it. In his first career start, Wentz looked terrific, calling audibles at the line of scrimmage, making pinpoint throws and using his arm strength to fit balls into tight windows.
It was a pretty convincing performance from Wentz. But let’s hold off on the excitement for a little longer.
While Wentz admittedly looked good in Week 1, it should be pointed out that he was facing the Cleveland Browns, who are not expected to compete much, if at all this season. Wentz showed all the skills necessary to succeed in the NFL, but lacked consistency, even against a team like Cleveland.
Being excited about Wentz is reasonable, but don’t be surprised when he shows some growing pains along the way.

Over the course of the season, the Eagles will face six teams with defenses that ranked in the top 15 last year. The first of which will test the Eagles on Monday Night Football next week—the Chicago Bears.
For a more accurate calculation of Wentz’s development, it will be his performance against the Bears that will really provide an in-depth look at where he is in his maturation. Following the Bears, the Eagles will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, another good test for Philadelphia’s new franchise quarterback.
It’s hard not to be excited about Wentz. But at the same time, it’s just as hard to imagine Wentz will continue to see this kind of success as a rookie. Wentz will have his struggles and may even receive a fair share of boos from Lincoln Financial Field. However, those will all be valuable lessons to the Eagles’ face of the franchise.
