TE Jacob Maxwell last one cut as Lions trim roster down to 75
The Detroit Lions finalized their first round of cuts on Tuesday, as the release of tight end Jacob Maxwell brought the roster down to a league-mandated size of 75 men, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.
Maxwell, 24, went unselected in last year's draft and has never appeared in an NFL game. With Eric Ebron, Brandon Pettigrew, Joseph Fauria and now Tim Wright already crowding the tight end competition, the Lions did not have a reason to retain Maxwell's services.
The Lions have released a dozen players this week, according to MLive.com. Besides Maxwell, the team has also parted ways with receiver Ryan Broyles, tight end Deon Butler, quarterback Garrett Gilbert, receiver Vernon Johnson, running back Desmond Martin, defensive tackle Roy Philon, cornerback Jocquel Skinner, cornerback R.J. Stanford, defensive end Erik Williams, receiver Andrew Peacock and linebacker Justin Cherocci.
MLive.com notes that cornerback Chris Owens has been placed on injured reserve.
The Lions have until Saturday to cut their roster down to 53 men.
