Terry Bradshaw: I would not bench Dak Prescott for Tony Romo
Former quarterback and Fox NFL Sunday co-host Terry Bradshaw would not bench Dallas Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott for veteran Tony Romo.
The Dallas Cowboys have themselves a problem, but it’s a good one. The impressive play of rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has many wondering if the starting position under center will simply be handed over to injured veteran Tony Romo when he returns from a back injury or not. The answer seems to get more and more complicated the better Prescott plays and as the Cowboys continue to string wins together.
For now, the company line appears to be Romo starts when healthy no matter what. But if the Cowboys continue to pile up victories with Prescott under center, especially as Dallas faces teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles in the coming weeks; will the changing of the guard to the 36-year old veteran come without some major reservations?
According to one Hall of Fame quarterback and longtime football pundit, if Prescott continues to play well and win, he wouldn’t dare sit the rookie for Romo.
“I would not put Dak Prescott on the bench,” former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and longtime co-host of Fox NFL Sunday Terry Bradshaw told Colin Cowherd on his Fox Sports Radio show The Herd on Friday. “I would leave him the starter and I wouldn’t have a problem with that at all. At all. Now, Tony will have a problem with it and I don’t blame him. Especially the way this kid’s playing. I would not bench him.”
The four-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Super bowl MVP went on to tout Prescott’s poise in the pocket as his most impressive trait.
“Prescott stands there like a stone,” Bradshaw continued. “And I’m like ‘Where did this come from?’ It’s impressive…you have it or you don’t.”
Through his first three games in the NFL, Prescott has been efficient but not explosive. Although the rookie has completed 66 of his 99 passes (66.7%) and hasn’t thrown a single interception, the 23-year old also has just one passing touchdown in that span. Prescott does have two scores on the ground.
Now that’s likely a combination of a conservative offensive gameplan being called by the Cowboys coaches and the rookie’s reluctance to take chances deep that could ultimately cost the team the game. But the more Prescott plays, the more Dallas’ offense seems to open up.
At this point, Prescott’s play hasn’t been so spectacular that it overshadows what Romo could have potentially done himself in those same situations. Thus, the veteran is still likely the Cowboys best option when healthy, making Tony the starter when he’s ready to return. But decisive wins over some of the best NFL teams in the coming weeks could change that narrative in Dallas. Especially if Prescott’s play is the driving force behind those victories.
