Texans K Bullock feels impact of new extra-point rule
After Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins hauled in a four-yard touchdown catch from Brian Hoyer in the first quarter of Houston's Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Texans kicker Randy Bullock became the first to demonstrate that extra points are no longer an afterthought in the NFL.
Bullock missed the point-after try wide right for the first PAT miss of his career. In the process, he became the first kicker to miss from the new distance introduced this season. Under an new rule this season, the line of scrimmage for extra points has moved from the two to the 15-yard line.
The goal of the rule change is to encourage more two-point attempts after touchdowns.
“Honestly, I thought I hit it pretty well,” Bullock said, per the Houston Chronicle. “I hit it pretty well. It just tailed off more than anything. That’s the impact of the new rule. It’s not a routine play.”
Despite the miss, Bullock went on to make field goals from 34 and 37 yards later in the game.
“It happened early in the game,” Bullock said. “You have to focus because there’s a lot of game left and do your job.”
