Texans' quarterback situation takes yet another turn
Is the quarterback carousel in Houston set to take another spin?
With the Texans down 42-0 in Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Bill O'Brien benched starting quarterback Ryan Mallett in favor of Brian Hoyer.
Mallett was 12 of 27 for 150 yards and one interception against the Falcons before being pulled.
Hoyer responded by leading the Texans on a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive culminating in a five-yard pass to tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz. He then led the Texans on two more scoring drives, including one that resulted in an 8-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Cecil Shorts. Houston wound up losing, 48-21.
A seven-year veteran, Hoyer won the starting job in training camp, with O'Brien citing his consistency as a main factor. But his tenure at No. 1 lasted all of three quarters in a season-opening loss to the Chiefs before O'Brien turned to Mallett, who started Houston's next three games.
With the Texans (1-3) on a short week as the team prepares for Thursday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts, the team's starting quarterback situation may once again become a major story line.
