The Chargers have ended Joey Bosa's holdout with a 4-year deal

With less than two weeks before the start of the regular season, the San Diego Chargers and No. 3 overall pick Joey Bosa finally agreed to a contract Monday that ended his holdout.

Negotiations between Bosa, who played college football at Ohio State, and the team took a public turn last week when the Chargers issued a statement saying they were pulling their best offer to the defensive end because he likely wouldn’t be able to participate in a full 16-game season given the length of his holdout.

He ended up with a reported four-year, $25.8 million contract, but the issue was never the size of the deal – the salary is set based on where Bosa was picked.

The sticking points in negotiations had been the fact the team wanted to push half of his $17 million signing bonus to March and that it wanted to include offset language in the deal that would give the Chargers financial relief if they had to release him before the end of his contract.

Bosa’s team issued a statement objecting to the team’s public stance, and it seemed he could end up re-entering the draft next season. But those concerns have now been replaced by whether Bosa will be able to get up to speed in time to play in the team’s opener given that he has just 13 days left to do so. The Chargers open the season Sept. 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
