Todd Bowles confirms status of Geno Smith

Head coach Todd Bowles of the New York Jets confirmed the status of quarterback Geno Smith as the No. 2 quarterback on the roster.

There is never a dull moment when it comes to the quarterback situation of the New York Jets. At this point in time, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is penciled in as the starter, his backup is Geno Smith, Bryce Petty is No. 3, and rookie quarterback Christian Hackenberg is No. 4 on the depth chart.

It remains to be seen if the Jets will enter the regular season with all four quarterbacks on the roster but one thing is for sure, Smith survived and played well enough to be kept. With a few teams across the NFL suffering from major losses to their starting quarterbacks due to injury, rumors were circulating if the Jets would be interested in parting ways with Smith.

Luckily greater heads prevailed since if the Jets decided to trade or release Smith, it would have left their quarterback situation with a big question mark. If something happens to Fitzpatrick whether he gets hurt or has a steep decline in play, Smith is logically the next best option at quarterback.

With Petty dealing with a shoulder injury and Hackenberg nowhere near ready, the Jets have a quality backup in Smith that should be able to step in and run their offense well. Of course, the jury is still out if Smith can be an effective starting quarterback but at least in 2016, if he actually has to start, would be playing with the best talent he’s ever had around him.

At least for now, the Jets have good depth at quarterback that has plenty of experience, youth, and upside.

When asked by the media, head coach Todd Bowles silenced the rumors once and for all.

Courtesy of the Media Relations Department of the Jets, here is what he had to say about the No. 2 spot at quarterback:

On if it would be fair to say that Geno Smith has solidified the number two quarterback position…

Yes, that’d be fair to say.

Overall, whether you cheer or boo Smith, he’s staying put with the Jets at least for one more year. Whether he plays or not remains to be seen but if he ever has to step under center, he would give the Jets the best option to win compared to those under him.
