Todd Gurley doesn't regret 'middle school' comments despite Jeff Fisher's firing

After Sunday’s 42-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Todd Gurley called out the Rams for being remedial. He said they looked like a “middle school offense,” which is harsh but does hold some substance. Los Angeles has the worst offense in the league, scores the fewest points of any team and can neither throw the ball nor run it despite having two top-10 picks at both quarterback and running back.

Not long after Gurley spoke out about the Rams’ deficiencies, head coach Jeff Fisher was fired. Coincidence? Probably. But even if it wasn’t a bizarrely timed occurrence, Gurley doesn’t care. He meant what he said.

“I didn’t really look at it that way,” Gurley said, when asked if he thought his comments had an impact on Fisher’s job status. “I didn’t care. Just speaking my mind, and speaking the truth of about how we looked.”

“It definitely should be taken to heart [given] the way we played,” Gurley said. “Just way too many turnovers, way too many penalties, and we just can’t be doing that week after week.”

That’s not to say Fisher’s firing wasn’t hard on Gurley. He admits it was difficult to deal with, as it was with a lot of players. He credits Fisher for being the one to draft him, saying he did a great job.

“It was tough,” Gurley told reporters. “It was tough on a lot of guys. Coach Fisher, he did a great job. He brought everybody in. We loved him as a coach. We know a lot of other people didn’t. But, at the end of the day, we knew what he did for us. He brought us in. He’s the one who drafted me when nobody else believed in me. It definitely hit us hard, for sure.”
